Parent training is a big part of RDI. Once the parents understand how to effectively guide and connect with their child on the spectrum, life becomes much easier for both the parent and the child.
As part of parent training, I post assignments for the parents every week and provide feedback on the videos they post for me every week. We work down the list of extensive Parent Goals outlined in the RDI framework.
I meet with the parents on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to answer questions, concerns and provide them with the necessary support.
Social group settings are a way for kids to practice the skills they are working on at home with their parents and build social competence in a safe setting.
Social Groups are also a perfect opportunity for kids to practice perspective taking skills, build relationship foundations and form real connections and friendships.
Happy Orange is conducitng virtual social groups in adherance with public health guidelines. Social exposure for special needs kids during the pandemic is an important part of their well being.
I work 1-1 with kids that don't yet have the necessary foundational skills or Engagement Motivation in place to really benefit from a social group.
I work with them on co-regulation, building observation skills, perspective taking and increasing student agency among other things.
Once the child seems ready, my goal is to move them into a Group setting so they can benefit from their peers and build social competence.
